Bowing Low: Rejecting the Idols Around Us to Worship the Living God

Seeing the idols in another culture revealed the idols in my own.

A 300-foot golden stupa covered with pure gold plates. At the top, visible only by a telescope: a giant 76-karat diamond surrounded by thousands of diamonds, precious stones, and jewels. On every high hill, another idol stood proudly– in all directions, as far as my eyes could reach. Golden pagodas and stone statues visible in all directions.

They don't stand gleaming in the sunlight, towering above our cities in tangible ways like the idols in Southeast Asia. They may be invisible at first. But they surround us nonetheless, dotting our landscape on all sides with their shiny promises. Will we open the eyes of our hearts to see them?

God will not share his glory with idols, even our refined American ones. He wants our whole hearts. He wants us to live holy lives.

Bold and challenging, Bowing Low is a piercing invitation to explore the seven idols to which the American culture bows and the Biblical truths which will tear them down.
