Dear Abram,

[Reflections after reading Genesis 12]

Dear Abram,

Let’s talk about this, okay? You don’t have to make any decisions right away. We just want you to consider what you are doing. Are you sure you really want to? Why? Are you sure you are hearing the voice correctly? He didn’t even tell you WHERE you are going. Don’t you know that is a little foolish and crazy to just go without any idea where!? And, how will we even find you again? Don’t you want to stay in communication with us? How will we contact you?

Really, Abraham, this is a little extreme, don’t you think? What makes you so special? I didn’t hear anything, so why did you?  You don’t even know what will happen to you out there. Have you really thought about that?

I hate to break it to you, but it’s a dangerous world out there. You’ve been sheltered by your extended family most of your life. And, you might not really understand what I am saying, so just take my word. You don’t realize how hard it will be. Do you really want to trust this Voice to provide for you? The world is a harsh place. You need people around you. You can’t expect Him to be there when you need him. What if you get sick? Who will take care of you then? What about the strange people you’ll meet? They can’t be safe! Everyone knows that!

We have good traditions and good ways. Aren’t they good enough for you? Do you think you are better than your ancestors? You won’t be able to stand under the pressure. We have worked hard to teach you well. Don’t you appreciate that? You must guard what we have instilled in you. You’ll probably lose the trust and faith we have in you if you leave, so please don’t. We can protect you here.

You are young and naïve. You think you can change the world—but you can’t. I know that’s hard to hear, but what difference will you ever make anyway? You have a few talents; it’s true. You can use them here! We need you– Especially if you are somehow hearing the Creator’s voice. Just stay here, okay? We’ll put you to good use. I promise. I have some ideas already. I know you can do a lot of good here if you just gave it a shot.  Just think about how much you will miss. You love us, don’t you?

Think about it, Okay? I’m counting on you to do what’s right!
